Embarrassing 80 s HUGE Mobile Phones.

When mobile phones were first introduced in the 1980's you could give yourself a Hernia just carrying one. They were also so expensive that only people with lots of money had one. Often associated wIth Yuppies, they were considered a big status symbol back in the day. When the first mobile phones arrived in Britain in 1985, you needed to fork out £3000, or £7500 in today's money, for the first mobile on the UK network. Some people earned enough extra money by being in constant touch to justify the cost of the phone and the exorbitant call charges that went with it. For the rest of us mobile phones were, just like car phones had been in the 70s, a plaything for the super rich. Mobile phones were not to be found in the upmarket shops of the West End of London though. Customers bought them from a few specialist start-up businesses, which advertised in the classified sections of the national broadsheets. The status factor was recognised as a prime selling point. A contemporary Martin Dawes' guide for salesmen talks about lightweight compact phones that could be carried in a pocket, briefcase or handbag and much beloved by the 'Yuppie element'.

1985 News Story on Debut of the Compact Disc CD

This story is from 1985 and heralds the debut of the compact disc in the US. The host at the beginning of the story is former Detroit NBC Affiliate WDIV anchor Mort Crim. (UPDATE: Recently Will Farrell said that the inspiration for Ron Burgundy was Mort Crim.) Love the hairstyle of the music aficionado in the story. You can see thousands of classic commercials and hundreds of vintage cartoons streaming free 247 at www.acmestreaming.com UPDATE: At the suggestion of some in the comments, it appears this clip is from 1985, not 1984 as I originally posted. Additionally for fan's of Frank from the clip (and his hair), someone claiming to be him has posted in the comments section.

Bill Murray Admits A Painting Saved His Life

Bill Murray shared a deeply personal account of how a painting literally saved his life while speaking to Russell from Red Carpet News TV at the London Press conference ahead of the UK premiere of new film The Monuments Men. The Ghostbusters and Lost In Translation star spoke with remarkable openness about feeling suicidal in the aftermath of his disastrous first acting audition. Recounting the incredible story the famously melancholy actor describes wandering the streets of Chicago aimlessly with the apparent intention of actually killing himself before accidentally walking into the Chicago Institute of Art.There he discovered a painting called The Song of the Lark, by Jules Breton, which inspired him to rediscovery hope and regain his will to live.

1980 Telefuture Everything Old is New Again!

This 1980 news report explores the predicted world of future television, particularly in terms of information services technologies -- with a concentration on Teletext and Viewdata systems. This is particularly fascinating given that now, in 2010, "convergence" of Internet services back to the television is the latest trend. This video also includes a couple of hopefully interestingamusing beginning and ending clips (from a bit later than 1980) bracketing the report. From the Vortex Video Archive. More information about this segment: http:lauren.vortex.comarchive000773.html Information regarding the techniques being used to recover these archival recordings: http:lauren.vortex.comarchive000768.html
