Let s Compare Commando C64 vs. CPC vs. Atari ST vs. Amiga

I loaded this game quite often on the C64. Not to play it, but to listen to the epic soundtrack. It's not a bad game. Quite short, but controls and graphics are good. The CPC version also plays quite well. It lacks the epic soundtrack, but overall it's a quite good shooter for the CPC. The 16-Bit versions look quite similar. The Amiga has a bigger playfield and better sounds, but the ST version plays surprisingly good. Still prefer the C64 version. Not only because of the soundtrack

game | Ghostbusters Longplay C64 50 FPS

Ghostbusters Longplay C64 50 FPS

Developed by David Crane and published by Activision in 1984.Follow me on Twitter: https:twitter.comAl82_Retro Add me on Google+: http:bit.ly1tPwL1uSurely this is another game that needs no introduction. Based on the 1982 box office smash film, you get to take control of your own Ghostbusters franchise and save the city from getting into a slimey, ghoulie mess. The game starts with you choosing your car and a selection of spook-zapping equipment (take the ghost bait!!), all of which costs money, before hitting the streets to catch some ghosts. New York city is represented as a grid of roads and buildings and you plot a course to one of the destinations using the Ghostbuster logo.If a building starts flashing, it means that there is a ghost there to be caught. Upon arrival, you must select a location to put the trap down and deploy your 2 ghostbusters. When ready, pressing the fire button will activate your proton packs, which can be used to push and pull the slimer across the screen towards the trap. Press the fire button again at the right moment to activate the trap and catch the ghost; if you miss, prepare to be slimed! You earn money for each slimer caught and you need to earn a certain amount of money before the Gatekeeper and Key Master finally meet at the Zuul building. All this time, the city's PKE energy is ticking up, which increases the frequency of ghost activity and also affects the speed at which the yellow phantoms roam around the city. If any of these manage to get to the Zuul building at the centre of the map, the city's PKE will drastically increase (missing any slimers will also cause this to happen).Once the PKE level reaches a certain level, there is a good chance that the dreaded Marshmallow Man will appear and try to stomp all over one of the city buildings. If he succeeds, you'll lose a substantial amount of cash whereas you'll be rewarded if you remembered to buy ghost bait and hit "B" on the keyboard in time.Eventually, the Gatekeeper and Key Master will arrive at the Zuul building and the final game screen loads. All this involves is managing to get 2 of your Ghostbusters past the Marshmallow Man by running through his legs into the building. If you manage this, you'll be treated to a little ending sequence where your men cross the streams on their proton packs and close the inter-dimensional portal threatening the city. You'll receive a cash bonus for completing the game and will receive a bank account number (basically a password) allowing you to play a new game with your bank balance carried over. For 1984, a game this well considered and fun to play was an impressive feat. There is a simple yet instantly recognisable version of Ray Parker Jr.'s famous theme song playing throughout. There are even a couple of digitised speech samples for when you catch a ghostgetting slimed. One of the best games for the C64, period.

game | Predator Longplay C64 50 FPS

Predator Longplay C64 50 FPS

Developed by Source Ltd. and published by Activision in 1988.Follow me on Twitter: https:twitter.comAl82_Retro Add me on Google+: http:bit.ly1tPwL1uAs one of the best 80's action films ever, Predator should need no introduction. A license tie--in was sure to follow and, sure enough, here it is.What is very interesting is that there are multiple versions of this game, which I didn't know about. According to info on the net, there are "slow" and "fast" versions of the game. The "fast" version, as the title suggests, runs much faster than the slow version, but is really a run-and-gun shooter that follows the plot of the film. This was the version that I owned on my C64 back in the day and also the version that I tried to complete a longplay for initially. Unfortunately, I'm not sure it can be completed (see reason why later). The "slow" version is visually and sonically identical to the "fast" version, but the gameplay is much slower, probably too slow and might explain why the separate "fast" version exists; I'm guessing either the developer or publisher thought the slowness would be a turn-off for gamers. In the "slow" version, the predator appears by leaping out of the air and decloaking in dramatic fashion. In the "fast" version, he simply walks in from the right of the screen. The "slow" version has an inventory at the top of the screen and it's possible to loot caches for extra items. Caches can contain extra ammo, bullet-proof vests and other items; these can be used by pressing the corresponding function key. The "fast" version has no inventory and no caches. In the final scene of the game, you have to kill the predator using the log suspended from a tree, just like the film. In the "slow" version, you stand next to the rope and pull down on the joystick and Arnie hoists the log up. You hit the predator (or avoid it) and when it appears on the right side of the screen, pull down on the joystick next to the log and spring the trap. Time it correctly and it will hit the predator and you can exit to the right. In the "fast" version, you can't pull on the rope and you can't exit to the right without killing the predator first. I think you might have to punch it to death, but didn't have the health to have a stand up fight with it.This longplay was recorded using the "slow" version. There's an interesting scene in the penultimate level where you're crossing the muddy swamp and the predator's 3 red dots appear. If you pull down on the joystick, you crouch in the mud and Arnie's sprite visibly darkens as he gets caked in mud. If you stop moving, the red dots move away as the predator can't see you. Unfortunately, you take damage from standing in the swamp and are likely to be worse off than just taking the hit from the predator. In terms of pure gameplay, it has problems. It's difficult not to get hit by enemy bullets as they can fire up and down the playfield and the controls are clunky, particular when considering that you'd need to operate a joystick AND keyboard. All this makes it too damn hard to try and play it for real. However, it is actually quite exceptional considering the fact it follows the film plot closely, with all the memorable scenes recognisable and, for all its faults, playable.Enjoy!
